Digg!
Wafah Bin LadenWith a last name about as positive as Amin, Rasputin or Pot, life since 9/11 has not been easy for Wafah Binladin - Osama Bin Laden's niece. Living in New York, her attempts at establishing herself as a lawyer failed and consequent attempts to become a successful pop star likewise floundered. As Simon Cowell, the X Factor judge and pop supremo, mentioned, ""there's only one worse surname you could have to launch a pop career, and that's Hitler."

Wafah openly blamed her failures on her infamous uncle Osama - who she never met (she's one of 300 of his nieces and nephews) - and became so fed up with the family name that he single-handedly dragged through the mud, that she started to use her mother's maiden name, "Dufour". After significant media attention prior to the name change, it seems the horse had already bolted from the stable.

An unaided upturn in fortunes seems a long way off. In one of many interviews with the press, Wafa lamented, "because of this last name that I have nothing to do with, the Western world hates me, and because I've chosen American values, the Saudi Arabian world hates me."

Wafah was born an American citizen while her father was studying in California. She grew up in Switzerland in a multimillion-dollar mansion. She studied law at Geneva University before going on to Columbia for a three-year doctorate.

In 2001, she lived in a $6,000-a-month loft on Spring Street, just ten blocks from the World Trade Center. Shopkeepers knew her as a big spender. A saleswoman at the retailer Bigdrop, which sells an array of designer dresses, handbags and accessories, reported that she would spend thousands of dollars at a time on designer clothes. But in the months before the 9/11 attacks, she left for London.

Wafah Binladin is apparently still living on Park Avenue, and still frequenting New York's trendiest clubs and bars. Some New Yorkers are still outraged that she should be living a life of luxury so close to the where the twin towers once stood. But Wafah, like her mother, has broken away from the Wahhabi codes for women and lives an essentially Western life - she's an American first by any judgement.

WafahHer mother, Carmen Bin Ladin, lives in Geneva and has been separated for fifteen years from her husband, Yeslam, the half-brother of the terrorist mastermind. Yeslam Bin Ladin meanwhile maintains that he has had no contact with Osama for years. He has been accused in a lawsuit filed by victims of the September 11 attacks of providing material financial support to international terrorism through his half-brother, but has vigorously rejected such allegations.

Carmen's marriage to Yeslam disintegrated when he expected their children to be brought up conservatively. "My husband doesn't even acknowledge his daughters when he sees them on the street", she said.

According to Wafah, her mother fears some fundamentalist will "do away with me" because of her attempts at becoming a pop star.

Wafah's website catalogues a handful of media appearances and explains that the polyglot Wafah can sing in Spanish, French and English and that she writes songs as well as sings them.  The music career has had little exposure in the media - although Wafah claims to have a voice similar to Chrissie Hinds. Wafah's biggest step into the spotlight was an appearance on MSNBC in early 2006, when the publisher Judith Regan signed Wafah to appear in a reality TV show.  The most far-reaching step into the limelight also came in 2006, when Wafah appeared in the popular U.S. men's magazine GQ in the above pose which caused much consternation on jihadi websites and across the Muslim world.

Surely, a woman who's a clear target for the jihadis - representing so much of what the strict Islamist enemy detest in a woman - needs to be better used by the Americans? In exchange for security and even a pop career (at least the woman can sing, unlike so many of today's lip-synch brigade) the US authorities ought to be using this wonderful Western asset to drive a stake into the enemy.

Many would argue that it's Wafah Binladin's right - as a free, American-born citizen - to turn her back on the Islamists as they've caused her enough harm already; to live a free, enjoyable life away from the war on terror.

But, Wafah Binladin has been making the kind of gestures that must be real music to the ears of the US authorities. In her 2006 GQ interview, she said, "I want to be accepted here, but I feel that everybody's judging me and rejecting me. Come on, where's the American spirit? Accept me. I want to be embraced, because my values are like yours. And I'm here. I'm not hiding."

Even a single album with a few ditties about her Uncle the fool or the odd interposed lyric denouncing the oppression of Muslim women by the Islamists - this is exactly the kind of thing that bursts extreme Islamism's totalitarian bubble. There is little any man can do faced with a crooning goddess, and, like Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue or the timeless Sabrina, a good music video subliminally plants the words of the song sung (albeit at the time at best the secondary focus of one's faculties) forever in one's head. Come out with a catchy number for Wafah and - Noriega style - the Taliban can be ghetto-blasted out of their trenches. Never underestimate the power of a Muslim woman, who has thrown of her male-imposed shackles.

I shall be the first to buy the album.

A message to all you government-paid propagandists and companies like the Lincoln Group: wake up. Carpe Diem. Wafah is an American and America is at war.

Morality Lost?

Imagine looking across the breakfast table at your wife and kids knowing that the corn flakes and orange juice consumed by them are dripping with the blood of innocents because you bought them with your terror-funding wages. Imagine driving your children to school in a luxury car which in itself is a fine-looking machine but - you well know - was bought with money reeking of innocent corpses and wrecked lives from some other corner of...

England to tour with full squad

England's two-Test series in India got the go-ahead after the players were assured at a meeting on Sunday there would be no threat to their safety. England are due to fly from Abu Dhabi to India with a full squad today. "It's a brave and courageous decision that will be respected around the world," said England & Wales Cricket Board managing director Hugh Morris. England's one-day series in India was cut short after the 26 November terrorist attacks in...

Another Flea off the Coat

A fugitive British militant linked to an alleged UK plot to use liquid bombs to blow up transatlantic airliners has been killed in Pakistan, reports say. Pakistani media said Rashid Rauf, born in Birmingham, was killed in a US air strike in North Waziristan, a haven for militants and the Taleban. Mr Rauf, on the run after escaping from a Pakistani jail, was alleged to have helped the group planning the attacks. Three men were convicted in the...

Al-Qaeda message condemns Obama

The second-in-command of Islamic militant network al-Qaeda has hit out at US President-elect Barack Obama. In a message purportedly from Ayman al-Zawahiri, the al-Qaeda deputy called Mr Obama a "house negro" - a demeaning term implying he served white people. Mr Obama's plan to bolster the US military presence in Afghanistan would fail, Zawahiri said. If genuine, the message would be the first acknowledgement by al-Qaeda of the president-elect's victory. The audio message appeared on militant websites. Zawahiri,...

Their names, addresses and personal details were contained in a leaked list of more than 12,000 BNP members published online. US airport security is second to none. Obamanomics

Obama's economic plan is a recipe for long-lasting disaster. Keep in mind that wrecking anything, as opposed to building things, requires very little time and effort. Obama's plan is deceptively attractive, while in reality it is a huge wrecking ball that will capsize the already listing ship of our economy. Here is a partial list of reasons why. Judge for yourself. Obama is proposing a trillion dollars in new spending. Where is he going to get the money,...

Just Criminal?

The recent British Government trend to not refer to "Islamic terrorism" or "Islamist terrorism" - instead referring merely to "criminals" and "criminal acts" - is either supremely clever or depressingly thoughtless depending upon the premise they started from. Islamist terrorism - a tidier phrase than Islamic terrorism - neatly describes the criminal act of terrorism carried out by Muslims with a political bent. With this phrase, there is no need for the epithet "extreme" before Islamist (meaning...

Fine Line

There are times as a convinced infidel when it's hard not to blanket-hate Islam - when you're worn-out, angry and reading up on yet another likely long-bearded, odium-spitting Islamist radical who hates you, your family, your country and everything you stand for yet lives amongst you and lives off you. It can be so easy to forget that there is a massive difference - a great gulf called civilisation - between Islam and Muslims on the...

Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye. Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive. The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies. The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf...

King Never Asked…

CNN's king of the talk-show hosts and the icon of one of the major television networks, Larry King, hosted an interview on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 with the devil himself.  Many Iranians felt completely betrayed by Mr. King's line of questioning. They felt that Mr. King was missing key questions. I am not advocating a hostile interview here, but how could Mr. King allow Ahmadinejad to easily dance away. It seemed he was deliberately making Ahmadinejad...
