hamasIn Britain, the Muslim Brotherhood has made its presence felt through its front groups and individuals who play double roles in society. The Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) is widely perceived as a front-group of the Muslim Brotherhood. It was co-founded in 1997 by Kemal el-Helbawy the European spokesman of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

In 2004, at the invitation of the MAB, the Muslim Brotherhood's "spiritual leader", Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, arrived in London. In 2001 Qaradawi had issued a fatwa that condoned the murder of Israeli civilians, a fatwa that was repeated on Hamas' website to justify their attacks against Israeli civilians.

During his 2004 visit, Qaradawi was publicly welcomed by extreme left-winger Ken Livingstone, who was then Mayor of London. Later, on September 13, 2005, Livingstone was asked to give evidence to the government's Select Committee on Home Affairs. Livingstone and others were giving evidence in the aftermath of the London bombings that had happened two months earlier, on July 7, in which 52 innocent people died.

Here, Livingstone said: "I find myself in complete agreement with the internal Foreign Office document that was prepared as a brief for the Home Office on the subject of Dr Qaradawi, which completely corroborates the stand I have taken on every single point."

The document Livingstone alluded to can be found here. It had been leaked to the Observer newspaper and had been published on September 4, 2005. The document was written by Mockbul Ali, an employee of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office who had previously praised the killing of Israeli civilians.

Mockbul Ali, who will be discussed later, had suggested that Qaradawi should not be prevented from making future visits to London. Qaradawi is banned from entering the United States - with good reason. In August 2004, shortly after his visit to London, Qaradawi said: "The abduction and killing of Americans in Iraq is a [religious] obligation so as to cause them to leave Iraq immediately."

hamasThis week, the annual British event known as "Islam Expo" came to a close. In 2006, this "celebration" of Islamic heritage and identity gathered criticism as the event - then held in Alexandra Palace in North London - took place while relatives were commemorating the first anniversary of the 7/7 attacks. Additionally, some of the proposed speakers at that 2006 event were known to hold extremist views.

One of these individuals was Qazi Hussain Ahmed, the head of the Pakistani Jamaat-e-Islami party, who had praised Osamabin Laden and other Al Qaeda members. "Qazi Hussain Ahmed, though invited, did not attend the 2006 Islam Expo event due to political engagements.

A speaker who did attend the 2006 event was Azzam Tamimi, who is a spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB). The MAB was co-founded in 1997 by a senior figure within the international Muslim Brotherhood - Kemal el-Helbawy.

Between 2000 and 2004, Tamimi was a senior lecturer at the Markfield Institutein Leicester. This institute was founded in 1973 by Kurshid Ahmad, who is now the vice-president of the Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami party. The Jamaat-e-Islami party is Islamist in nature and extreme enough to support the killing of apostates. In August 2006the Jamaat-e-Islami party announced that it had made a large donation to Hamas. This donation was made via a charity set up by the party.

Hamas (Harakat Al Muqawama Al Islamiyya or Islamic Resistance Movement) is listed by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. Even though Hamas has been responsible for the deaths of Israeli civilians, it is not on Britain's list of proscribed organizations.

86 wivesNigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women.

The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God.

"A man with 10 wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them," he told the BBC.

He says his wives have sought him out because of his reputation as a healer.

"I don't go looking for them, they come to me. I will consider the fact that God has asked me to do it and I will just marry them."

But such claims have alienated the Islamic authorities in Nigeria, who have branded his family a cult.

Most Muslim scholars agree that a man is allowed to have four wives, as long as he can treat them equally.

But Mr Bello Abubakar says there is no punishment stated in the Koran for having more than four wives.

"To my understanding the Koran does not place a limit and it is up to what your own power, your own endowment and ability allows," he says.

"God did not say what the punishment should be for a man who has more than four wives, but he was specific about the punishment for fornication and adultery."

'Order from God'

As Mr Bello Abubakar emerged from his compound to speak to the BBC, his wives and children broke out into a praise song.

Most of his wives are less than a quarter of his age - and many are younger than some of his own children.

The wives the BBC spoke to say they met Mr Bello Abubakar when they went to him to seek help for various illnesses, which they say he cured.

The Attractive Alternative of Hell PDF Print E-mail

hell OKI was baptised two weeks into my life then confirmed a Roman Catholic at fourteen. I don't proselytise. I turn down most invitations outside of mass to church events and only bother God when I need to, or I think it's time. I would never vote under pressure from my so-called religious leaders. I am a secularist but would never join a secularist society. I've been called a Papist, a bead-rattler and I've had "Every sperm is sacred" (a tune from Monty Python's Meaning of Life) sung to me on a few occasions by those trying to wind me up - but I'm no victim and always maintained my sense of humour as others attempted to manifest theirs.

In spite of this article, I consider my faith a private matter - far more private than say my allegiance to a football club, political party or cricketing county. What I am relative to my religion is my own business and it doesn't get in the way of how I go about my daily work or what I wear and nor does it make any difference to the way my colleagues go about their daily work in relation to me here in Britain. I'm comfortable with what I am and what I believe in - I don't need to wear a funny hat, or sport a label explaining why I am a religious man.

I don't live my life completely according to my faith - yes, I've bought condoms, yes, I had sex before I was married and yes, I'm human. I suppose I'm socially cohesive too (racism and religious hatred are for numbskulls, not for me) with my kaleidoscope of friends of most religions, races and backgrounds (not that I ever went out looking for a rainbow coalition of bosom buddies). It's simply that in public I don't do religion.

Still, I, like many, am just about fed up to the back teeth with those who go round either aggressively publicly demonstrating their religion or trying to thrust it down others' throats. Fed up with the air of superiority the extremer versions of these religion-addicts seem to have - even though they are clearly often borne of barbaric ideologies (like the wealthy Saudi Wahhabis) or desperate, recovering alcoholics and drug addicts clinging for branches (like so many Western converts to Islam and many of the so-called happy-clappy brand of in-your-face evangelical Christians).

Brown Down & Out PDF Print E-mail

BrownThe Scottish National Party has pulled off a stunning by-election victory by winning Glasgow East, one of Labour's safest seats, by 365 votes. The SNP overturned a Labour majority of 13,507 to win with a swing of 22.54%. The SNP polled 11,277 votes in the contest, while the Tories came third with 1,639 and the Lib Dems, with 915 votes, came fourth. SNP candidate John Mason said the victory was "off the Richter scale".

Voter turnout was 42.25%, down on the 48% figure at the last election, with 26,219 votes cast. The result was declared in Glasgow in the early hours of Friday, after a humiliating recount was requested by Labour, which won 10,912 votes in the contest.

Will it add to the pressure on Gordon Brown? Of course. Does it make David Cameron look a certainty as next British Prime Minister? Yes.

Is this by-election result bad for British politics? Yes, no doubt. For the Tory leader, David Cameron, is yet to define himself. He's yet to set out a coherent set of policies. He's yet to front up to most of the key issues that really matter today for the long term health of Britain - counter terrorism, the rise of extreme Islamism, civil liberties and immigration. Instead there has been policy short-termism - focusing on the economy and an NHS which cannot deliver in the longer term with Britain's population greying and the promises of the 1940's still intact. All Cameron needs to do is sit tight - leaving Brown to stumble from one disaster to another while Brown's ego lands with a bump in recognition of the reality that he was a strong chancellor but just doesn't cut it as a prime minister.

Journal Restructuring

In September 2010 the Westminster Journal concludes the moving of its centre of operations to New York. This is partly due to England's often senseless libel judgements and partly because of a restructuring of the journal under a corporation of new writers. After three years we decided it was time to make some changes. Though we are still called the Westminster Journal and our focus will remain British, New York is the journal's new home. The...

Uganda Wakes Up

Uganda has finally woken up and seen the light. Uganda has indicated it will sensibly bow to international pressure and amend draconian anti-homosexual legislation that includes the death penalty for HIV-positive people convicted of having gay sex. This controversial bill was put forward by a member of the ruling party in Uganda. Uganda's president, Yoweri Museveni, said the bill had become a "foreign policy issue" and needed further consultation before being voted on in parliament. The proposed law, which...

2009 Closes

So 2009 ends with Al Qaeda’s version of the Nutcracker - the Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab stuffing explosives in his underpants and trying, but failing, to take down a transatlantic airliner as it descended into Detroit. Giving Mutallab seat 19A at Schiphol was a mistake that should lead to repaired airline security strategies. Homeland Security agencies worldwide have naturally stepped up their vigilance in case there are any other nut-exploding nutters out there with the same thing in...

HSBC MAKES GRAVE ERROR

Extreme Islamism - like all political movements - requires cash. Those who pay extreme Islamists are at best helping to further bigoted, Flintstone ideas and, at worst, they are directly funding Islamist terrorism. Since Islamists often show two faces to get what they want (in an uneducated misinterpretation, they justify this as taqiyya) a good lesson is to never pay an Islamist, whether you think he or she is an extremist or not. Not a penny. Remember that...

Leftist Tools

Left-wing extremists in the United Kingdom are gaining new recruits by exploiting the ennui resulting from 60 years of prosperity and decadence. This ennui is also driving a resurgence in recruitment and radicalisation activity by "whiter" supremacist groups, pro government extremists and egalitarian movements. Continuing racial and gender disparities in outcomes, mass consumerism during a prolonged period of peace, and other consequences of contrived intra-white status jockeying, intensified by the increasing cognitive stratification of the last 30 years, seems to be...
