Police in the north-eastern Indian state ofMeghalaya say they have arrested five people on charges of smuggling uraniumore.
Only one packet of unprocessed uranium wasfound on them, but the police say the gang could have stolen more. It is not clear how much ore the group had,or what it planned to do with it. The arrests are at an embarrassing time forIndia, just days after the Nuclear Suppliers Group ended a ban on civilian nucleartrade with the country. Indian officials had worked hard topersuade members of the group, which governs global trade in nuclearcomponents, that its nuclear industry was in safe hands. Uranium is the basic fuel for nuclearweapons, but it has to go through complex processes before it it issufficiently enriched for use. 'Stolen' Police are not sure whether those detainedwere part of an organised global enterprise, or simply some amateurs, trying tomake some quick money. The seizure was made in the village of Mairang on Monday when police detainedfour people, including a village headman, for stealing a quantity of uranium. A fifth man surrendered to the police onTuesday after police carried out a search of the area. "We seized a packet, just one packet, containing uranium ore from a village headman. It has the seal of India's AtomicMinerals Division, so we are taking this very seriously," said MKharkrang, police superintendent of West Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. Mr Khakrang said they were looking for the sonof an employee of the Atomic Minerals Division - , which looks after thecountry's uranium mines - who is alleged to have stolen the packet fromDomiosiat. "The young man is stillabsconding," he said. In May this year, police in Meghalaya arrested five people for stealing uranium ore. Others have been arrested in the past for trying to smuggle uranium out of the state. "But we don't know yet whether this is an organised racket. It could well be and we may have not yet found the kingpins," Mr Khakrang said. |

The
left lost not a minute in tarring Sarah Palin after McCain selected her as his
running mate. Of course they had to be careful-very careful. As hard as they
worked, they couldn't dig up anywhere near as much dirt on this outstanding
self-made governor than they have all along covered up for their darling Obama.
What
did they do? The cunning leftists are nothing if they are not devious and
Machiavellian. It would have been a huge self-inflicted disaster if the men had
led the offensive. So, true to form, these unscrupulous leftist cowards hid
behind their women's skirts and let them do their dirty work.
Women
vilifying a woman, no matter how baseless and vicious the assaults may be are
better tolerated than men doing the dishonourable thing-they are chalked to the
nasty game of partisan politics. To the leftists, as is the case in war and
love, all is also considered fair in politics.
Here
is a woman, by all accounts, a personification of the American story. A
self-made woman rising from the heart of the middle class, distinguishing
herself as a tireless devoted public servant who had worked through the grades
to the governorship post by single-mindedly remaining faithful to the trust of
her electorate.
Here
is a woman who had no sugar-daddy sponsor to send her to an Ivy League school,
but had to work hard on her own with the support of her not-so-wealthy working
parents to finish college.
Here
is a woman, as wife and a mother of five children, who served in her community
to better things for all. She was an active and constructive member of the PTA.
Her tireless services in the community impressed the people of the town to
elect her as their mayor. All along, she championed the best interest of the
people, rather than her own self interest.
Here
is a woman who took on the powerful corrupt officials at the state level. She
confronted corruptions and the old-boys network. She even challenged the
miscreants in her own political party and took on an incumbent governor and beat
him without selling herself to the powerful interest groups.

Britain's leading Muslim bodies say they are fighting extremism. In one of our most respected mosques, Sara Hassan came face to face with hardline female preachers of separatism. Here, she reports on the shocking results of her investigation:
In a large balcony above the beautiful main hall at Regent's Park Mosque in London - widely considered the most important mosque in Britain - I am filming undercover as the woman preacher gives her talk.
What should be done to a Muslim who converts to another faith? "We kill him," she says, "kill him, kill, kill...You have to kill him, you understand?"
Adulterers, she says, are to be stoned to death - and as for homosexuals, and women who "make themselves like a man, a woman like a man ... the punishment is kill, kill them, throw them from the highest place".
These punishments, the preacher says, are to be implemented in a future Islamic state. "This is not to tell you to start killing people," she continues. "There must be a Muslim leader, when the Muslim army becomes stronger, when Islam has grown enough."
A young female student from the group interrupts her: the punishment should also be to stone the homosexuals to death, once they have been thrown from a high place.
These are teachings I never expected to hear inside Regent's Park Mosque, which is supposedly committed to interfaith dialogue and moderation, and was set up more than 60 years ago, to represent British Muslims to the Government. And many of those listening were teenage British girls or, even more disturbingly, young children.
My investigation for Channel 4's Dispatches came after last year's Undercover Mosque, which investigated claims that teachings of intolerance and fundamentalism were spreading through Britain's mosques from the Saudi Arabian religious establishment - which is closely linked to the Saudi Arabian government.
In response, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia denied it was spreading intolerance, while Regent's Park Mosque, which featured in the film, urged all mosques to be "vigilant" and monitor what was taught on their premises.
So earlier this year, dressed in a full Islamic jilbaab, I went back to Regent's Park Mosque to see what was being taught there. As a woman, I had to go to the main female section, where I found this circle preaching every Saturday and Sunday, eight hours at a time, to any woman who has come to pray.

In order to understand the clerical rulers of Iran, we need to learn about the genesis of their religious faith, Shi'a Islam, and the pivotal place of the Mahdi. Examination of the vast Islamic literature shows that the present sect of Shi'a Islam has evolved from a mix of cultural, political, economic and religious influences. I shall outline, in a summary form, how the belief in the Mahdi, the revered Imam whose advent is expected by the Shi'a faithful, crystallized over time. The Mahdi is expected to appear and save the world when it has reached the depth of degradation and despair. Below is a brief chronological account of how Shiism and the belief in the Mahdi as its pivotal figure were formed. Muhammad ruled with an iron fist while alive and no one contested his authority. He designated no heir, and left no will, oral or written, and had no male issues from any of his wives and slave women to inherit the office. Some believers, however, felt that the prophet wished for Ali, his cousin's and son-in-law, to assume the Ummah's leadership while a vast majority opted for the Arab's traditional patriarchal seniority-based practice by choosing Abu-Bakr as the Caliph. Abu Bakr, Muhammad's oldest high disciple and the father of Muhammad's nine-year-old child-bride Ayesha, assumed the position of the first Caliph and died shortly thereafter. He was followed by Umar ibn al-Khattāb, Uthman ibn Affan became the third Caliph, and finally by Ali ibn Abu Talib. Ali was considered by his admirers to be the greatest Muslim warrior and by his detractors as a vicious killer. Two of Ali's sons, Hassan and Hussein were viewed similarly. Ali was murdered, according to one version, by one of his own followers who resented Ali's capitulation to the Caliphate hierarchy. That is, the assassin and his like-minded Muslims felt that Ali betrayed Muhammad by not fighting to be his immediate successor and by consenting to be the fourth Caliph. Another version of his death is that a Persian warrior by the name of Brahman Jazyyeh killed Ali, avenging the death of numberless Persians that Ali and his people had slaughtered. Ali reportedly killed untold numbers of Islam's enemies, including Persians, with his much-feared sword that had its own name: Zulfiqar. He was addressed by his followers as Amir-ul-Momeneen (Commander of the Faithful). |

Last Saturday, while British athletes were getting on with their golden weekend at the Beijing Olympics (now known as the Great Haul of China) and most Brits were privately celebrating yet another reason to be British, virtually unnoticed the extreme Islamist cult Hizb ut Tahrir al Islami met publicly in a begrimed area of East London to hear various speakers discussing "Khilafah the need for political unity".
Speakers present included Sajjad Khan on "Realising Political Unity", Dr. Mahmad Salim on "The Shariah and Unity", Sister Sultana Parvin on "Scientific and Educational Potential under the Khilafah State", Jamal Harwood on "Economic Development through Unity and Khilafah policy" and Imran Waheed on "Pakistan- an application of Unity and Khilafah policy". The relatively unknown, loss-making satellite television station, Islam Channel, was present to record proceedings.
As at all other Hizb ut Tahrir al Islami events, there was much talk about bringing back the Islamic Caliphate which finished in 1924. Much discussion about how neither democracy nor dictatorship worked and how Khilafah was the only workable solution compatible with Islam. No one version of Islam was mentioned and no mention of which caliphate to revive was ever referred to. The great successes of democracy and certain dictatorships swept aside as if human progress depended purely on algebra. Always the first law in misleading advertising is to avoid the concrete and plant the vague - the speakers as deceptive as Sweeny Todd in their spinning of illusions.
Again, endless self-delusion about the superiority of non-specific "Islam" as a governing force and blanket denial of the one major retrograde force behind the remarkable failure of Muslim countries now and before 1924 - failure to separate between Islam and State. Again, there was no-one able to explain how Sharia (or Hizb ut Tahrir's version thereof) would actually work once power was assumed in the revival of a Caliphate - no names mentioned of who would be Caliph and on whose inspirational interpretations of Sharia the Caliphate would depend. Again, no mention of the individuals behind 9/11, 7/7 or other Islamic terror attacks - the War on Terror described instead as a War on Islam where all Muslims (presumably even the Muslim perpetrators of behind-the-back slaughter) are victims. A young audience being lectured to by lazy thinkers with lazy minds blinded by concepts with no real meaning - fighting talk about La-la-land making Chavez, Mugabe and Castro seem like grounded individuals in comparison.
