Club ParadisoLast week I came across a friend of a friend. A thirty-three-year old called Andy, who lives on England’s South Coast - working in a call centre by day and as a nightclub DJ by night. We found ourselves across from each other at dinner and both desperate to escape the predominant conversation at our end of the table about either schools or satellite navigation systems (if I ever hear again how someone “nearly drove into the sea because of a faulty satellite navigation system” I shall happily accept the ASBO).

To maintain a modicum of sanity amidst the bleaters at our end of the table, we struck up a private conversation and I discovered, while consuming my potage starter, that Andy used to be a member of the Catholic group Opus Dei.

I was puzzled as to how he was recruited, what Opus Dei actually got up to (alas mortification of the flesh came up just as the waiter posited my T-bone in front of me) and, most of all, I wanted to know how he left.

Opus Dei has about 87,000 members in more than 80 different countries. About 70% of Opus Dei members live in their private homes, leading traditional Catholic family lives with secular careers, while the other 30% are celibate, of whom the majority live in official Opus Dei centres. As well as working in more traditional charitable work through its members, Opus Dei is involved in setting up and running universities, university residences, schools, publishing houses and technical and agricultural training centres. Founded in Madrid in 1928, Opus Dei has been the subject of various controversies during its lifetime (most recently Opus Dei received some unwanted attention due to the extraordinary success of the novel The Da Vinci Code, in which both Opus Dei and the Catholic Church itself are depicted very negatively). It could be considered - in terms of the spectrum of views that is the Catholic Church - to sit at the (extreme?) right of catholic ideological positioning.

Andy told me that what made him leave Opus Dei was his discovery of Trance Music. Simple as that. He heard it on the radio one day and his life course changed.

Azzam TamimiEach month we'll be adding a new Islamist to our Traitor's Gate section, who we believe to be guilty of using Taqiyya to on the one hand pretend to be a decent citizen and on the other to be an Islamist having supported / supporting or having promoted / promoting jihad or those who perpetrate terrorism in the name of Islam.

The point of the Traitor's Gate section (named after the 400 year old entrance gate at the Tower of London) is to list individuals there who government - local or central or European - might come across. To make the world aware of the duplicity the culturalist (as opposed to violent) Islamists use. To advise officials never to deal with these traitors, as their one goal is an Islamist Caliphate and they'll try anything to push their goals along. To inform foreign immigration authorities of potential future visitors. And especially to inform the political Left - who often (blindly) march alongside these Islamists - of the true nature of the individuals with whom they march. The Islamist-leftist compact should wake up - political Islam is not just a disaster for many causes (like feminism and gay rights) that the left cherishes; it also overturns the Enlightenment idea that diversity of opinion is desirable.

This week, we present to you Azzam Tamimi.

Azzam Tamimi is a Palestinian-Briton academic. He writes occasionally for the Guardian Newspaper. He is the director of the "Institute of Islamic Political Thought" in London. He has written five books including "Rachid Ghannouchi, Democrat within Islamism", Oxford University Press, 2001, and "Hamas: Unwritten Chapters", Hurst & Company, 2006. He is a regular commentator on the Arabic satellite channel al-Jazeera and makes frequent appearances on a number of other channels, both English and Arabic.

Infighting among the Mullahs

MullahsLooking past the narrow prism of the mainstream media, one is struck by a seemingly serious anomaly in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Mullahs presently ruling the country are in a fight for their life on two fronts. The external battle is with the United States—the Great Satan and its adopted child Israel, or the Zionist Entity, as the Mullahs prefer to call it. The other front that we don’t hear much about is the infighting among the Mullahs themselves that presents even greater threat for de-frocking of the in power cleric conmen. Why is it that the Mullahs of Iran are battling each other instead of fighting the Great Satan?

It is the nature of the beast. The Shiite sect of Islam, as is the case with all other Islamic offshoots, is a conglomerate of many feuding factions. Even before the last spade of dirt covered Muhammad’s grave, jockeying for power began in earnest among his chief disciples. Muhammad’s son-in-law cousin Ali felt that as the boss’s kin he should take over the family business. Other more powerful and cunning contenders elbowed Ali out of the way and Ali got to run the business after three others in succession held the office. Ali’s turn was very short, since some of the believers who had been angry at him for allowing himself to be kicked around by the ones who preceded him—the usurpers of the mantle of Islam, as they saw it—daggered the man to death while he was on his way to pray at a mosque.
So, the rest is history. Feuding, infighting and blood-letting are the standard operating procedure in the religion of peace that aims to do whatever it can to snare the world into its fold.

Historical precedence aside, the present Shiite Iran is home to over 300,000 Mullahs. The most descriptive term for Mullah is parasite. A Mullah begins his career as a parasite, lives as a parasite and dies as a parasite, simply because he contributes absolutely nothing to the necessities of life, yet gobbles disproportionately more of whatever resources he can devour.

Morality Lost?

Imagine looking across the breakfast table at your wife and kids knowing that the corn flakes and orange juice consumed by them are dripping with the blood of innocents because you bought them with your terror-funding wages. Imagine driving your children to school in a luxury car which in itself is a fine-looking machine but - you well know - was bought with money reeking of innocent corpses and wrecked lives from some other corner of...

England to tour with full squad

England's two-Test series in India got the go-ahead after the players were assured at a meeting on Sunday there would be no threat to their safety. England are due to fly from Abu Dhabi to India with a full squad today. "It's a brave and courageous decision that will be respected around the world," said England & Wales Cricket Board managing director Hugh Morris. England's one-day series in India was cut short after the 26 November terrorist attacks in...

Another Flea off the Coat

A fugitive British militant linked to an alleged UK plot to use liquid bombs to blow up transatlantic airliners has been killed in Pakistan, reports say. Pakistani media said Rashid Rauf, born in Birmingham, was killed in a US air strike in North Waziristan, a haven for militants and the Taleban. Mr Rauf, on the run after escaping from a Pakistani jail, was alleged to have helped the group planning the attacks. Three men were convicted in the...

Al-Qaeda message condemns Obama

The second-in-command of Islamic militant network al-Qaeda has hit out at US President-elect Barack Obama. In a message purportedly from Ayman al-Zawahiri, the al-Qaeda deputy called Mr Obama a "house negro" - a demeaning term implying he served white people. Mr Obama's plan to bolster the US military presence in Afghanistan would fail, Zawahiri said. If genuine, the message would be the first acknowledgement by al-Qaeda of the president-elect's victory. The audio message appeared on militant websites. Zawahiri,...

Their names, addresses and personal details were contained in a leaked list of more than 12,000 BNP members published online. Membership of the BNP is banned by the police, and trade unions have been pushing the government to allow them to expel members with connections to the party. The BNP's leader, Nick...

Obamanomics

Obama's economic plan is a recipe for long-lasting disaster. Keep in mind that wrecking anything, as opposed to building things, requires very little time and effort. Obama's plan is deceptively attractive, while in reality it is a huge wrecking ball that will capsize the already listing ship of our economy. Here is a partial list of reasons why. Judge for yourself. Obama is proposing a trillion dollars in new spending. Where is he going to get the money,...

Just Criminal?

The recent British Government trend to not refer to "Islamic terrorism" or "Islamist terrorism" - instead referring merely to "criminals" and "criminal acts" - is either supremely clever or depressingly thoughtless depending upon the premise they started from. Islamist terrorism - a tidier phrase than Islamic terrorism - neatly describes the criminal act of terrorism carried out by Muslims with a political bent. With this phrase, there is no need for the epithet "extreme" before Islamist (meaning...

Fine Line

There are times as a convinced infidel when it's hard not to blanket-hate Islam - when you're worn-out, angry and reading up on yet another likely long-bearded, odium-spitting Islamist radical who hates you, your family, your country and everything you stand for yet lives amongst you and lives off you. It can be so easy to forget that there is a massive difference - a great gulf called civilisation - between Islam and Muslims on the...

Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye. Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive. The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies. The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf...

King Never Asked…

CNN's king of the talk-show hosts and the icon of one of the major television networks, Larry King, hosted an interview on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 with the devil himself.  Many Iranians felt completely betrayed by Mr. King's line of questioning. They felt that Mr. King was missing key questions. I am not advocating a hostile interview here, but how could Mr. King allow Ahmadinejad to easily dance away. It seemed he was deliberately making Ahmadinejad...

Pakistan Marriot Bomb
